New School planning 16-story academic building with 612 beds on Fifth Avenue

A recent community presentation by The New School indicated that it is planning to replace its low-rise building on the southeast corner of Fifth Avenue and 14th Street with a 7-story academic building topped by a setback tower with 9 floors for a 612-bed dormitory, according to an article in this week's edition of The Villager by Lincoln Anderson.

The article indicated that the meeting had been arranged by City Councilmember Rosie Mendez and that the school's presid3ent, Bob Kerrey had presented a massing design, shown at the left, "that he felt was very likely to reflect final plans."

The article said that the new building would have retail use at the 14th Street corner and an 850-seat auditorium that would be partially below grade and available for public events. It added that the project would be "as-of-right," that is, it would not need public approvals.

The article said that the school will make a formal presentation to Community Board 2 in February and that demolition would probably begin in March and end in July and that the new building would be completed by 2013.

The article quoted Ms. Mendez as stated that "The one thing they did say is that it's going to be less glass...40 percent glass; the other 60 percent they imagine to be metal - which frightened me," adding that "I'm getting images of Cooper Union's building, with all that metal and glass. I just don't see it fitting architecturally in the community." The Cooper Union building has been designed by Morphosis and has been widely hailed as one of the most interesting and exciting new buildings in the city by numerous critics.
